CONDITION MONITORING - a maintenance activity - INCURS COST

CONDITION BASED MAINTENANCE - a maintenance management process - DELIVERS VALUE

Condition monitoring (CM) and condition based maintenance (CBM) are essential elements of a risk based maintenance and asset integrity management strategy, however, this is not always recognised.  In many cases very little attention is paid to implementation of effective CM and CBM thus reducing the opportunity for the delivery of increased maintenance performance.

The value proposition of CBM lies in the use of condition information to control and focus maintenance activities for production and safety critical plant, which will contribute to enhanced business performance through:
  • optimising intrusive maintenance
  • effective planning of essential maintenance
The combined effect is a reduced risk of production interruption and increased confidence in business plan deliverability.

To deliver significant value to the maintenance management process the implementation of CM/CBM must follow a systematic process:

CRITICALITY ASSESSMENT - focus CM/CBM on critical machines only

CM STRATEGY - data collected must be sensitive to fault development

SYSTEM SET-UP - CM data collection scheduled in CMMS/staff competency trained

DATA ANALYSIS - CM data transmitted to CBMnet website for analysis by experts

CBM MANAGEMENT PROCESS - develop management process for condition directed maintenance

MAINTENANCE DECISION SUPPORT - condition assessments and maintenance actions made available to the asset

The CBMnet service has been evolved to drive up stakeholder value, reduce operational costs and increase production efficiencies.
